Simultaneous idiopathic segmental infarction of the great omentum and acute appendicitis: a rare association

چکیده
Idiopathic segmental infarction of the greater omentum is an uncommon cause of acute abdomen. The etiology is still unclear and the symptoms mimic acute appendicitis. Its presentation simultaneously with acute appendicitis is still more infrequent. We present a case of a 47-year old woman without significant previous medical history, admitted with an acute abdomen, in which the clinical diagnosis was acute appendicitis and in whom an infarcted segment of right side of the greater omentum was also found at laparotomy. As the etiology is unknown, we highlighted some of the possible theories, and emphasize the importance of omental infarction even in the presence of acute appendicitis as a coincident intraperitoneal pathological condition.

PRIMARY TORSION AND IDIOPATHIC SEGMENTAL INFARCTION OF OMENTUM
Torsion and infarction of the greater omentum are two rare clinical situations which present as an acute abdomen. Nevertheless, knowledge concerning these two problems can help the surgeon in proper diagnosis and treatment. Since the first report on primary torsion by Eitel in 1899, a few hundred more have been reported and some collective reviews published to date. In this study we will p...

ABSTRACT Primary or spontaneous infarction of omentum is a rare disease producing acute abdominal condition. This is due to vascular changes in circulation of greater omentum. Infarction can be caused by torsion of omentum around the adhesion band following an operation, or it can occur spontaneously without an adhesion and operation. Rarely this condition is not due to torsion a...
متن کاملSimultaneous idiopathic segmental infarction of the great omentum with spontaneous splenic rupture: a rare association.
Idiopathic segmental infraction of the greater omentum (ISIGO) is a rare cause of acute abdomen. One of the main symptoms is right-side abdominal pain, while its etiology is still unclear. Until now, ISIGO simultaneously with spontaneous splenic rupture (SSR) has not been reported. Here, we presented a case of a 35-year old man, who was admitted with an acute abdomen, and the clinical diagnosis...
متن کاملCT Findings of Primary Torsion of the Greater Omentum with Segmental Infarction: Case Report
infarction is a rare condition. Infarction of the omentum causes localized acute abdominal pain and can therefore mimic other surgical emergencies. There is little information on this condition to be found in the radiological literature, because it is not usually diagnosed until surgical intervention, being previously diagnosed as acute appendicitis or acute cholecystitis (1, 2). There are only...
متن کاملConservative Management of Segmental Infarction of the Greater Omentum: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Segmental omental infarction (SOI) is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. Depending on the site of infarction, it mimics conditions like appendicitis, cholecystitis, and diverticulitis. Before the widespread use of Computed Tomography (CT), the diagnosis was usually made intraoperatively. SOI produces characteristic radiological appearances on CT scan; hence, correct diagnosis using this form...
